The Learning Series — Listen to your heart
I began living a more authentic life when I stopped heeding the voice of others telling me what to think or how to think or what I should do. When I stopped identifying myself as performing roles as mother, daughter and friend. When I stopped living by the identity given to me by my family and society. When I let go of making choices based on anxiety, a desire to please and to belong, I stopped making choices out of fear. Discovering my own authentic identity has allowed me to live more meaningfully, joyfully and with purpose.
I live in my own identity. ‘Few people choose their identities. Instead, they simply internalise the values of their parents or the dominant cultures (e.g, pursuit of materialism, power, and appearance). Sadly, these values may not be aligned with one’s authentic self and create an unfulfilling life.’ Dr. Heshmat, author of ‘Science of Choice’.
